THE 40-YARD DASH
What it is: Starting from a three-point stance, firefighters sprint for 40 yards in full PPE (no scba, tennis shoes instead of boots).
DUMBBELL BENCH PRESS
What it is: Firefighters dumbbell bench-press as many reps as possible (male, 50-pound dumbbells; female, 20-pound dumbbells).
VERTICAL JUMP
What it is: Firefighters stand flat-footed next to a 24-foot extension ladder and then jump as high as they can, touching the highest rung they can reach.
KETTLEBELL SWINGS:
What it is: Firefighters swing a kettlebell with good form for as long as they can without stopping (male, 35-pound; female, 18-pound).
THE 1-MILE RUN
What it is: Firefighters run a mile as fast as they can.
